On Friday night, I had the pleasure of judging Fanshawe College's Unbound fashion show in London, Ontario. The annual production serves to give graduating students an opportunity to showcase their design skills before family, peers and most importantly, major players in the fashion industry. Upon my arrival, it was clear I was in good company with the likes of seasoned designer David Dixon, Leesa Butler of The F-List, and Gail McInnes of TFI News among the other guest judges. Knowing the challenges an up-and-coming designer must face living two hours outside of the nearest fashion hub, I had no idea what to expect.
I was pleasantly surprised by the broad range of design disciplines including sportswear, swimwear, outerwear and dresses that paraded down the runway. Designers to watch included Jennifer Edwards, who took the award for best collection, Stephanie Connell, who won Best Design, and Josie Jansen for her well tailored feminine coat collection reminiscent of Burberry recent collections. Watch for a special issue highlighting the best of the students work to accompany an issue of Flare later this year.
