The royal drama The King's Speech with Colin Firth and Helena Bonham Carter snagged the People's Choice Award at this year's festival. If the past winners—which include films such as Precious and Slumdog Millionaire—are any indication, bets are this flick will be turning up at the Oscars. Other big winners? Denis Villeneuve's Incendies picked up the best Canadian feature prize, the documentary award went to Force of Nature: The David Suzuki Movie, and the vampire drama Stake Land got top nods for the midnight madness program.
Sadly, I didn't get a chance to see these films with my crazy schedule. However, I did come up with my own list of standouts:
Most entertaining: The Town
Best Performances: Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams in Blue Valentine and festival "it" girl Natalie Portman in Black Swan
Best Drama/Cast: Barney's Version
Sexiest Drama: Last Night
Most Gut Wrenching: Javier Bardem in Biutiful and James Franco in 127 Hours

Yesterday was my last day of TIFF interviews. I finished the festival with a round table with Eva Mendes. Luckily, the two other journos doing the interview were men—both of whom seemed too smitten with Mendes stunning looks to come up with many questions. As soon as I sat down and said where I was from, she gushed over how much she loves our magazine (always a nice way to get things started). I returned the compliment by letting her know how much I loved her TIFF flick Last Night. It's a relationship drama that deals with infidelity and stars Sam Worthington, French heartthrob Guillaume Canet, and Keira Knightley. Mendes plays "the other woman," but it's a rich role that showcases her acting chops while confirming her sex symbol status.
Besides smoldering on screen, Mendes has been busy working on a line of housewares, available at Sears, and stepping behind the camera to direct a short film starring Christina Ricci. But it's her upcoming turn as Maria

We had a chance to take in the latest flick from actor/director/producer Tony Goldwyn at TIFF this week and were wowed by yet another standout performance from Hilary Swank. Granted, she had lots to work with given the astonishing material based on an unemployed single mother of two who over the course of 12 years earned her law degree and freed her brother (a wrongfully convicted murderer) by challenging founded DNA evidence. Phew. This is certainly bound to get Swank some attention come Oscar season. Special thanks go out to RIM for the show tickets. The FLARE fashion team weighs in on our favourite looks from the TIFF red carpet:
Fiona Green, Associate Fashion Editor
"Ingénue Carey Mulligan is my new favourite on the red-carpet scene, making consistently sophisticated style choices. This starry Christopher Kane frock was perfect for a starlet such as herself. From Resort 2011, the original piece was modified by adding length to the skirt with a zippered panel."
Mosha Lundstrom Halbert, Assistant Fashion News Editor
"When I saw Marc Jacobs' ode to the lady for Louis Vuitton, I thought it would make a lovely alternative to the ubiquitous beaded fishtail gowns I'm sick of seeing. Leave it to 90's fashion icon Winona Ryder (a Jacobs' loyalist, remember her darling MJ wardrobe for her trial?) to step out in a curvy black LV frock. With an role in the much-touted Black Swan film, could this LV outing signal Ryder's retur

I tried to get into the first press screening of Black Swan, but sadly showing up ½ hour before the press screening didn’t cut it—the crowd was enormous! So, I decided to get to this morning’s 9am screening at 7:30am. Luckily, hauling myself out of bed extra early was worth it. It’s hard to know where to start when describing this hallucinogenic thriller. It’s incredibly intense, the musical score is brilliant, and Portman is disturbingly perfect in her role as a psychologically and emotionally tortured ballerina. In some ways, it’s Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler starring a female lead meets Requiem for a Dream. Sadly, I don’t think it’s going to have a mass appeal. But for those who are willing to endure some pretty heavy subject matter, the payoff is huge. FYI: despite all of the buzz about Portman’s Rodarte wardrobe, it definitely doesn’t play a starring role.

Between the films, press events and countless parties, celebrities in town for TIFF can often be found pursuing the goods in the numerous tricked-out gift suites. One that stands out? Tastemakers Lounge. Featuring an edit of Canadian brands, from Joe Fresh Beauty to Jessica Jensen handbags, Bamjamz and GUATS bamboo loungewear to Damn Heels ballet slippers, the lounge seeks to promote local labels on the international stage. Even Mattel Canada is in on the gifting, offering UNO card sets and board games - presumably for the long flight back to Los Angeles? When I stopped by, actor Terrence Howard (looking dapper in a three piece suit) was just on his way out. Talk about taste.
