Ritual Spa

Ritual Spa

MAKE IT A BRAZILIAN We sent one of Flare’s in-house testers to try one of the snappiest waxers in town at Ritual spa in Toronto (note: ask for Iryna). “The wax itself was so unbelievably quick—I was in and out in 15 minutes, including dressing time,” said the veteran, who has been subjecting herself to Brazilians for years. Let’s face it girls, it’s never going to be pain free, but it’s worth avoiding one of those Samantha-on-Miranda moments à la Sex & the City movie, isn’t it? Suzie Dicker, Beauty Intern

Whitney Port

Whitney Port

YES, YOU BELONG ON THE HILLS The Much Music Video Awards was the event in Toronto last weekend and I flew in from L.A. to help The Hills’ Whitney Port get ready. Whitney is a California girl all the way, so I wanted to give her that sun-kissed glow (even though the sun was nowhere in sight!) I started by using NARS Orgasm Cream blush to achieve a pink, healthy glow and then Chanel Bronze Universal cream blush on top to make her skin appear more tanned. Use the bronzer mainly on your cheeks and a little on your temples and forehead to make it look natural. I completed her golden girl look with a shimmery rose gold shadow over her eyelids, two coats of brown mascara and the perfect warm nude lipstick.

Aquafresh White Trays

Aquafresh White Trays

SMILING BRIGHTLY What pairs perfectly with a tan? A rack of pearly whites. And don’t we know the perfect trick. Forget expensive teeth-whitening at the dentist—get yourself a box of Aquafresh White Trays. After just three days of wear (we popped in a tray and left it on while watching ET Canada each night) our teeth were left glistening white. Sort of makes you want to run to the nearest makeup counter for a bold red lipstick to show ‘em off. And at $40, that’s something to smile about.

See the trays in action with an interactive video at whitetrays.ca

Kat Von D, the tattoo artist who stars, has developed her own line of makeup that achieves an artistic and edgy look without the mega commitment. Club kids will crush on the liquid eyeliner ($18 each) in cool shades more inventive than basic black: purple, brown, gunmetal, army green and black with glitter.

Liv Tyler

THE SHINY MTV MOVIE AWARDS Nude lips were a huge trend at the MTV Movie Awards this year. Liv, Lindsay and Charlize all wore different versions of the look ranging from just a bit of gloss to nude-to-rose tones. This look is so simple to achieve and requires little makeup shopping. You can apply a basic balm such as Rosebud Salve to bring out the natural tones in your lips and make lips look smooth and moisturized. Or, use a tiny bit of your foundation to cover the pigment in your lips and then add a bit of moisturizer to keep them from looking too dry.

Lashes

Lashes

TRICK OF THE TRADE Here’s a trick we makeup artists use for getting at those bottom lashes (and the tiny ones in the corners) without making a mess. Take a thin, synthetic eyeliner brush, shaped flat and square, and load it up with your favourite smudge-proof mascara. Paint along your bottom lashes using up and down and side-to-side strokes.

Using the brush allows you to get all the way to the roots and gives you a very natural look. Also use it on top lashes to darken the roots without destroying your eyeshadow.

Avril Lavigne

CULT OF CELEBRITY According to Women’s Wear Daily, the celeb fragrance craze we’re experiencing will continue well into 2009, though we’re still waiting with bated breath for Christina Aguilera’s signature scent to drop this fall. Late in 2009, hip hop will battle pop-punk when Queen Latifah’s perfume goes nose-to-nose against Avril Lavigne’s personal spritz.

MAD FOR CHATTERS Last week Chatters Canada and Redken hosted the National Stylist Competition in Calgary. This red carpet event gathered top Chatters stylists from British Columbia to Quebec to compete live in makeover colour and cut categories. Residents close to their Vernon, B.C. location, be sure to book an appointment with Peter Downie, who won Stylist of the Year.

If you have yet to check out a Chatters salon, you probably will soon. As one of Canada’s largest chain of hair salons with almost 80 locations across the country, they are growing fast. We love that each salon boasts a boutique out front selling hard-to-find beauty and hair care brands such as Lola cosmetics and Kiss Me Mascara.

Chanel Inimitable Mascara

Chanel Inimitable Mascara

THE DESERT ISLAND QUESTION If you were stranded on a desert island… which one piece of makeup can’t you live without? Mascara! Whether it’s a slight hit of brown or tons of black, mascara is an essential for most women. Since we’re constantly searching for the best one, I thought I’d fill you in on which one is in my kit. It’s Chanel Inimitable Mascara. It’s all about the rubber brush, which allows you to get close to the root and create a very natural looking lash. It is a little more expensive than some of the drugstore brands out there, but it’s worth every penny to me. You won’t be disappointed!

Posietint

Posietint

SPOT ON We looooved Benefit’s original Benetint, which originally launched way back in 1977. The flush of rouge it brings to our cheeks is natural, innocent and divine. This month, Benefit is introducing Posietint, $35. It’s the same dewy liquid formula, now in a bubble gum pink hue. Tried it. Loved it. And now we’re hording it. ‘Nuff said.

Spa

IS IT SUMMER YET? Now that it’s June, we’re thinking about the shape of our bods. Admittedly, fashionistas have been known to take a cab if we have to walk any further than a block in heels; to order take-out instead of grocery shop when the cupboards are bare; and to shop online when we don’t feel like disrobing our lululemons. So when Universal Contour Wrap offered us a trial, claiming the treatment guarantees a loss of 6 inches in 1 hour, our lame muscles flexed for the phone.

Therapists wrapped cloths dipped in sea clay around us like mummies. We then enjoyed a pampering facial while the suction-like effect worked its magic. To our astonishment, once unwrapped and re-measured, we lost a whopping 8 ½ inches! We’re skeptical that the results really last 30 days, but we’d be willing to work out another appointment before our next big event.
