Everyday Recipes From Ste. Anne's Spa

Everyday Recipes From Ste. Anne’s Spa

Eat, Stay, Love
If you’ve ever been to Ste. Anne’s Spa in Grafton, Ontario (just over an hour east of Toronto) you’ll know that one of the reasons it’s so highly acclaimed (it’s been voted Canada’s Favourite Spa by SpaFinder Magazine’s Readers’ Choice Awards 3 years in a row) is because of the food. Executive Chef Christopher Ennew creates stick-to-your-ribs traditional dishes such as Bacon-Wrapped Pork Tenderloin with Shrimp that are as tasty as they are good for you. Now, for the first time ever, they’re releasing a cookbook, called Everyday Recipes From Ste. Anne’s Spa, $29.99, containing all of Chef Ennew’s most requested recipes using local, seasonal ingredients. Fingers crossed it will include the yummy salad dressings that made eating greens a treat when I was there last. The perfect remedy for battling holiday bloat!

La Dolce Vita
Attention all beauty vixens—we hear that a Dolce & Gabbana cosmetics line, supposedly several years in the making, is in its final stages and could even hit shelves as early as the new year. Plus, rumour has it they’ve tapped ultimate bombshell ScarJo to be their campaign beauty. We know one thing, it’s sure to ooze classic Italian sex appeal…and we can’t wait to get our hands on it!

Bond No. 9 fragrance

Bond No. 9 fragrance

Vanity Flair
Bling in the New Year with a few drops of your favourite Bond No. 9 fragrance from their latest mega-luxe creation. This over-sized 42 oz. vessel is a perfume fountain of sorts, capable of injecting a little (or a lot) of Marilyn glamour into any lackluster vanity. Bedecked with over 16,000 hand-appliquéd Swarovski crystals, a gold spigot and a price tag of over $4,000, it’s definitely a fantasy splurge…better send a note to good ol’ Santa, baby.

Forever Young
If you’re in need of a midday laugh, look no further than www.bewareofsideeffects.ca. Launched by Reversa, a Canadian skincare company (and one of the first to use glycolic acid as a primary ingredient in their anti-aging treatments), the site aims to tease while divulging all of the possible “side effects” you may experience from their products. We wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise, but let’s just say it encourages a little fun with the local hunk. (We love the gardener!). Smart move for the brand, after all, sex really does sell.

LUSH Shave the Planet Shaving Cream

LUSH Shave the Planet Shaving Cream

Green Gifter
This year, my friends have decided they’d rather donate to each other’s favourite charities instead of buying gifts. Alzheimers for Angela, AIDS research for Laura…the rationale being, we don’t really need anything anyway, right? Call me Scrooge, but I was a little bummed. It’s not that I don’t want to give to charity; it’s just such a nice feeling to watch someone open the present you’ve picked out for them, enjoying their reaction, hot apple cider in hand. That’s why I’m going to cheat and buy something that they’ll love and use while proceeds go toward a good cause! For example, the green guy in your life might love LUSH’s Shave the Planet Shaving Cream ($15). It’s made with Fair Trade shea butter from a Women’s Cooperative in Ghana, so it supports the community’s quality of life every time he shaves. All’s fair in love and gifting.

Nashville Knockout
Faith Hill is the latest celebrity to jump on the fragrance bandwagon. It’s no surprise the country gal is launching her own all-American scent—the songstress has already ventured into the beauty biz as a face for CoverGirl. Her yet-to-be named juice is due to hit shelves next Fall, coinciding with the release of her seventh album. Hill’s hubby Tim McGraw also launched his own successful fragrance earlier this year, and we hear there are already whispers of a possible joint project. Move over Posh and Becks.

The new black, literally
One of winter’s biggest trends this year is BLACK lips. And yes, even you can pull off this modern gothic look this New Year’s Eve. I know it sounds alarming, but please pop into Holt Renfrew and try one out before you judge. You’ll be surprised how sheer and pretty it looks on its own or it can be layered with brighter colours for a richer tone. Brands such as Yves Saint Laurent, Lancôme and Lipstick Queen have all included sheer noir lipsticks and glosses in their Fall/Winter collections. I love the sheer lipgloss and here is my fave way to wear it: Stick to the basic principles of clean, clear skin. I like to conceal any problem areas and then finish with powder. Keep the eyes bright and sparkly by curling lashes, highlighting the centre of the lid and inner corners with a shimmery eye shadow. Finish with two coats of mascara.

Givenchy Very Irrésistible

Givenchy Very Irrésistible

Dressed to Impress
‘Tis the season to give rather than receive, however, it’s not so easy trying to drum up fab ideas for every extended family member and their dog every single year. Luckily, we spotted this sparkly fragrance box from Givenchy while doing the rounds this week. It’s spot on for dear Aunt Martha. Why wrap up another pair of slippers this year when she’ll fall over herself when she discovers a blinged out box of Very Irrésistible instead?

The Straight Goods
On a recent visit to London, I popped into the loo for a mid-evening primp when I noticed a curious contraption there in the corner. Much to my surprise (and utter delight) it turned out to be a coin operated hair straightener. Now, every time I hit the ladies room in the middle of a Saturday night dance-off, my fringe longs for the same spoiling convenience. Finally, thanks to the Beaujolais Beauty Company, a mere toonie will keep us looking turned out a la Keira Knightley all night long. Look out for the luxe stylers to hit your local club district in the new year.

Barefoot Venus - Cake Beauty

Barefoot Venus – Cake Beauty

Home is where the heart is
Some of the most scrumptious goodies we’ve laid eyes on lately just happen to be homegrown—perfect gifts to dazzle friends and family while doing your part to boost the local economy. The retro-inspired limited edition Ginger Snap Collection from Barefoot Venus are bath and body delights after my own heart. They smell delicious and are gorgeous enough to sit sink-side with their sexy pin-up labels. Plus, it’s the gift that gives back—10% of profits are donated locally in support of Autism awareness. Another Canadian treat we love is the You Deserve This gift set from Cake Beauty. Revive an over-worked hostess or cubicle mate with yummy smelling hand and foot creams that will leave them singing Ahhhhhhh!

Honey Dew Day Spa

Take a breather
After work mall marathons, stolen parking spots and never ending lineups don’t exactly spell out yuletide cheer. Before you lash out on one of your fellow shoppers, consider rejuvenating your holiday spirit with a festive treatment at your local spa. Vancouver’s Honey Dew Day Spa offers a range of fun options for vegging out. We love the sound of Under the Mistletoe, which gets you party prepped with a microdermabrasion facial and a Louboutin-worthy pedi. Skoah [skoah.com] (locations in Vancouver and Calgary) helps you put your best face forward with an ultimate Angel Glow facial, which also includes a luxe massage and one of their trademark lip glosses. Better still, ditch the driving all together and treat your girls to a pampered night in. Pour some bubbly and trade shopping horror stories as you indulge in Massage on the Go, a Toronto-based service offering group spa packages that are sure to beat any wrapped gift. Call (416) 566-3690 for details.

EMK Placental Hair Treatment

Making Head Lines
News flash! Hair growth products aren’t just for Pops or your paranoid GBF anymore. Women supposedly make up 40% of people suffering from hair loss and thinning, but repairing a patchy mane isn’t the only benefit. Ask glossy haired Eva Longoria or Simon Cowell (okay, so he might be in it for the re-growth), both are reportedly fans of EMK Placental Hair Treatment, a crazy-sounding concoction out of the Hollywood Hills that claims to be the secret behind stars’ ever-youthful red carpet tresses. Natural placental enzymes are said to stimulate and nourish hair follicles, resulting in fuller, stronger, and shinier hair sans surgery. Available online at www.emkplacental.com.

Vavelta

Bye Bye Botox?
While Botox remains the plumper of choice for the rest of the world, our UK counterparts have already been enjoying the effects of Vavelta at their local medi-spa. A fountain of youth of sorts, this new treatment awaiting FDA approval is comprised of collagen cells donated from the foreskins of newly circumcised babes. Sounds suspicious (and gross), yet it’s more convincing than we originally thought. Unlike other anti-aging treatments, the minimally invasive injection only requires one shot and is said to encourage the growth of new collagen, instead of just replacing it with a filler. Plus, it’s not merely for use around the eyes, mouth, and forehead, but can also help repair areas damaged by scars or burns. Stay tuned to its North American debut, if you dare.

Eyebrow grooming

Bigger is better
Perhaps one night you were a little bored and decided to take your trusty Tweezerman out for a tweak. Problem is, once you started plucking you couldn’t stop, and when you finally took a hard look at your newly groomed arches, the damage was already done. Those fragile little hairs never grew back quite the same, did they? Now, Bosley, a hair transplant specialist in the States, is helping gals frame their face again by grabbing fine hairs from the nape of the neck and placing them above their peepers. We’re not exactly lining up to cross the border, but we’re keen enough to know that desperate times call for desperate measures. What would you do to get yours back again?

Fresh Black Tea Instant Perfecting Mask

Fresh Black Tea Instant Perfecting Mask

Testing, testing…
Traveling is probably the worst time to experiment with new beauty products, but I do it anyway since although my skin is sensitized, it’s also desperate for extra TLC. On my last Euro-bound press trip, I found three new products to love, so I figured I’d share and save you the guinea pig routine.
1. L’Oréal Skin Genesis Pre-Moistened Towelettes. Use these ¾ of the way through your flight to wipe away the germy grime sticking to your face. So refreshing!
2. Biotherm Lait Corporel Anti-Drying Body Milk. Apply this all over your hands and body after your first in-room shower to feel dewy, but not at all greasy. Plus, the light lemony scent helps battle jet lag.
3. Fresh Black Tea Instant Perfecting Mask (now available at Holt Renfrew!) Wow. I put this on my unbelievably haggard looking face and had no idea what was in store. Though the cucumber scent is divine, the tingling effect freaked me out at first. But once I washed it off, there was an instant visibly radiant effect that really surprised me. Thumbs way up.

Red Hair

Red Hair

Don’t deny your roots!
Imagine my distaste last week when my favourite rebel Prince Charming tried to escape the fact that he is clearly a “Ginger”, claiming instead that he is lack-luster “auburn”. Listen Harry, as a fiery locked lass myself, I’ve got a real bone to pick with you. For such a worldly young man, your shameless British view that being Ging’ is a bad thing is just plain ungrateful. Sure—those extinction rumours may have turned out to be a red herring, but considering redheads account for less than 4% of the world’s population, you might show a little more appreciation for being such a rare commodity. I get that Chelsea is a buxom blonde, but would he believe that ladies on this side of the pond actually choose to dye their hair red—a shade synonymous with sexiness, mystery, and allure? Turn heads with a fiery look of your own, along with the Prince and I, with the new shade from Clairol Perfect 10 by Nice ‘n Easy, Medium Reddish Blonde.
