“I’m constantly thinking about how I can steal DNA,” quips Charlotte Tilbury, mesmerizing the media gathered for the Canadian launch of her eponymous makeup range. She’s referring to her blurring, glow-rousing Wonder Cream primer, or what she calls “Gisele in a jar.” It takes a lot to impress us jaded beauty journos, but the flame-haired Brit—arguably the most keyed-in celebrity makeup artist on the planet—speaks in sound bites, which we’re eating up like wine gums.

“It’s all about giving the secrets away,” says Tilbury, regaling us with the tales behind her bestsellers. She previously developed Giorgio Armani’s posh cosmetics collection, but this time, it’s personal. Her K.I.S.S.I.N.G lipstick in Nude Kate was custom-made for bestie Kate Moss (godmother to Tilbury’s son, Flynn). Ditto for Penelope Pink, specially designed for Ms. Cruz. But the be-all is Charlotte’s Magic Cream, which, as the story goes, she first whipped up in her kitchen to instantly transform partied-out, runway-ravaged models backstage. If a girl was lucky, she got to take home the unmarked plumping potion. Now we can all buy the essential oil–laced, hyaluronic acid–loaded blend. (Is it really the same stuff? Who cares—it’s still cultishly adored.)

The fact that Tilbury knows how to spin a good story (her “brrrillliant!” explanations of the looks she created at shows such as Tom Ford and Donna Karan are in themselves Vine-worthy) only benefits us all. Like an editor, she has managed to distill her front-line experience—working on fashion shoots with Mert & Marcus, Mario Testino, Katie Grand and Carine Roitfeld—to form a “makeup wardrobe” based on famous icons. “I realized that beauty, much like fashion, is cyclical, and that there is a library of 10 looks and inspirations I return to again and again,” she says. For each “face,” there’s a seven-piece collection ($245–$275) that allows you to achieve the look, taking the guesswork out of which shadow goes with which lipstick. Want to bring out your inner Kate Moss? The “Rock Chick” caboodle is, literally, what she uses on the star. Time will tell whether the unique approach will resonate beyond a customer’s entrée to the brand, but everything is also available à la carte. To figure out how to apply, simply tune in to the how-to videos on her site.

We enticed the budding business mogul to design an array of looks exclusively for FLARE. The result? Bombshell, boho and just right for summer’s sultry nights—which is fitting, since Tilbury grew up in Ibiza. “From an early age, my sister and I used to sneak into parties. I was so intrigued by the glamour, sophistication and beauty. Whether it was a pool party with the Rolling Stones or drinks with the original ’90s supermodels, mixed with artists, hippies and free spirits—it all shaped my aesthetic.” So if the looks shown here appear ultra-luxe, for Tilbury, she’s just keeping it real.
Sophia Loren–inspired warm chocolate shadow and loose tendrils framing the face look smokin’ hot on everyone.
