With a ’50s flavour dominating the runways, it’s no wonder the ubiquitous cat eye took centre stage. But in a surprise twist, the iconic flick appeared in unconventional alterna brown at Matthew Williamson and terracotta at Marni. A tamer incarnation took hold in its original black hue: the “kitten eye,” a slim line along the upper lashes with a tiny upward tick at the outer corners. We caught a glimpse of this more wearable trend at Dolce & Gabbana, Jil Sander and Nina Ricci. But the best—and most dramatic—liner appeared at Jonathan Saunders, where a thick, angled and precisely sharp wing took flight courtesy of Lucia Pieroni, lead makeup artist for M.A.C. “A 1950s housewife in South Beach” is how she described the look, which she created using a thin, angled brush dipped in black gel eyeliner. “Draw a line from the inner corner of the eye, along the lash line to the outer corner, flicking it up at the end,” says Pieroni, who up-sized for effect.
