As the fashion pendulum swings to ’90s plaids and degradé sweaters once again, a luxer new-day take—plush furs, rich velvets— unfolds. Here, a beauty interpretation of the magical merge by Yves Saint Laurent Beauté’s creative director of makeup and Canadian-by- way-of-Paris Lloyd Simmonds.

Give ‘Em Lip

“The original grunge was really about nude faces,” says Simmonds. “Keep the idea of raw skin but then add couture sophistication to one feature.”

Sweet Surrender

“It’s all about that puce-y, yellowy-brown colour that was very big,” Simmonds says. “No mascara— it’s a big grungy halo with a shimmer to it to give shape.”

FLARE picks: YSL Pure Chromatics Palette in City Drive Classy, $74; Bourjois Rouge Edition Lipstick in Beige Trench, $20. Dress, Louis Vuitton. Sweater, $90, Cheap Monday.

The basis of the grunge look is a ravaged black eye, submits the makeup maestro. “Tons of liner in the rim and a little bit underneath, and I added a touch of dark grey glitter on the inside to catch the light and to make the texture not just grease.”

FLARE Picks: YSL Dessin du Regard Eye Pencil in Black, $32; Urban Decay Moondust Eyeshadow in Moonspoon, $24. Sweater, $990, and top, $550, Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane, Holt Renfrew. Necklace, Tiffany & Co. Ziegfield Collection.

Club Kid Revisited

“I don’t like that word ‘grunge,’” says Simmonds. “It’s really just about not following the crowd, being who you are and playing with that. So if you want to wear blue and green together, why not?”

FLARE Picks: YSL Pure Chromatics Palette in City Drive Arty, $74; Joe Fresh Lip Gloss in Nude Glaze, $8. Sweater and earrings, Rodarte.

Down With Uptown

“I emphasized the gold eye by putting clear lip gloss on it,” says the pro. “The sophistication is the colour combination: weird grey-blue nails with brown and liquid gold.”

FLARE Picks: Essence Stays No Matter What Jumbo Eye Pencil & Shadow in Cute Copper, $3; YSL La Laque Couture in Grey Underground, $27. Coat, Jill Stuart. Sweater, Missoni, $855. Earrings, Tiffany & Co.
