Carly Rae Jepsen, one of our recently named top 50 Canadian style Icons (get your Icons copy online and on newsstands now!), is having an incredible year. After taking home three Junos in April, the singer added another accolade to her trophy case at last night’s Billboard Music Awards: Top Digital Song for “Call Me Maybe.” FLARE talked to Jepsen’s makeup and hair artist, Andrea Tiller, to get the exclusive scoop on the award-winner’s hot new hair colour and her Billboard beauty look.

Q: How would you describe Carly Rae’s usual red carpet look?

A: The looks that I’ve done with CRJ for red carpet are all very different. We like to experiment and try new things keeping in mind her personal style on and off stage. She has amazing eyes and lips so it’s very easy for me to play with makeup. When it comes to her hair she definitely has her signature look with the bang,s but whatever we do is usually both sexy and effortless.

Q: How do you come up with a beauty look for a red carpet event?

A: I always collect inspiration pictures that I look to in the early stages of creating a look from runways shows to beauty icons to fashion editorials. I gather my favorite pictures and show CRJ my ideas. Sometimes it starts with these inspiration images and other times we get the dress first and work around that. We usually have a conversation about what we want to achieve with the particular look and what we are inspired by at the time.

Q: How would you describe her look for the Billboard Music Awards?

A: I would describe our Billboard look as edgy, sexy with a touch of grunge. To achieve this vibe I did a rich cranberry/plum smoky eye and messy textured beach waves. I like to think it’s sexier and more risqué then what we normally do on the red carpet.

Q: One change is the fact that she has a new auburn hair colour! Why the change and why now?

A: Change is always good! She always wanted to go red and I love it on her. This color really suits her and it brings out her eyes…you can see the texture more which reads well on camera and I get to create and play with new makeup looks that I may have not been able to with her dark brown hair.

Q: How did Carly Rae’s new hair influence her makeup?

A:  I’ve always had a love for rich cranberry and plum colours and knew right away I was going to use that palette as these were the perfect colours to bring out her eyes…this look is all about the eyes! Once I knew what dress was chosen for the Billboards I knew this was the perfect event to work with these colours as the dress was black and anything could go.

I wanted to keep the hair very simple, sexy and effortless. Since the focus of the look was the eyes, I chose to do very loose curls using a 2-inch curling iron to give the hair texture and volume and her rich beautiful hair colour show. I also used a lot of texuring products to make it current/modern and have a little messy beach wave flavor.
