Spring’s best dos highlight baubles and bows

Embellished hairband

The look: The embellished hairband

Starred at: Dolce & Gabbana

How-to: Use sashes and bows, decorated with eye-popping jewelled brooches. This crafty do requires a bit of prep to create necessary texture; if your hair is too slippery, the hairband will fall out. Tease a half-inch section behind your ears, where it’s invisible, says Tony Masciangelo, a professional stylist for Nexxus who created the looks in this story. Next, secure the hairband to the textured area with bobby pins. Style your hair with 6–10 wraps of a large curling iron, using setting spray as you go for extra security. Then, loosen the curls with your hands and lightly backcomb the underside of your hair.

FLARE’s pick: Nexxus Heat Protexx Heat Protection Styling Spray, $13.

(Left) Dress, Autumn Cashmere. Hairbands, Le Catogan and Pam Chorley’s Fashion Crimes; brooch and hairpin, Carole Tanenbaum Vintage Collection. (Right) Jacket, Rodebjer. Half-hat, Gadabout; bracelet (worn as headpiece), Pam Chorley’s Fashion Crimes; brooches, Andy Thê-Anh, Carole Tanenbaum Vintage Collection and Rita Tesolin.

Posh ponytail

The look: The posh ponytail holder

Starred at: Louis Vuitton

How-to: Make ponytails go glam with elegant accessories and plenty of polish. For your smoothest ponytail—sans frizzy pockets along the top—use a dab of pomade on your palms, then run it through your nearly dry locks. Tip your chin upward and look up while brushing it into place, says Nick Arrojo of TLC’s What Not to Wear, who insists on a nylon-and-boar-bristle brush (nylon gets right down to the root, while the boar bristles add shine). To flatten flyaways, hairspray and gently run your hand over the surface.

FLARE’s pick: Arrojo Holding Spray, $18.50.

Dress, Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair. Hair clips, Louis Vuitton; earrings, Carole Tanenbaum Vintage Collection.

Fedora

The look: The fedora

Starred at: Gucci

How-to: Team a manly chapeau with girlie locks. Once you remove your hat, your do can turn flat in a hurry. Bring locks back to life by lightly spritzing a brush with conditioning spray, then shaking your head upside down to get at the roots from underneath, says Arrojo. On tough hat marks, spray directly on the spot and, in small circular motions, use the pads of your fingers to work the product into your roots (as if shampooing).

FLARE’s pick: John Frieda Root Awakening Health Boosting Detangling Spray, $10.50.

Jacket, Jeremy Laing. T-shirt, Ksubi. Hat, Biltmore, Gadabout; belt (worn as necklace), H&M.

Hair and makeup, Tony Masciangelo, Nexxus Salon Hair Care, Plutino Group; Assistant fashion editor, Fiona Green.

"Headliners" has been edited for FLARE.com; the complete story and where to buy appears in the April 2009 issue of FLARE.
