Behind-the-scenes makeup and hairstyling tips direct from the runways’ top pros

New York Fashion Week

Bronze Nails
3.1 Phillip Lim

The Look: Bronze Nails

We stopped in our tracks when we stumbled upon rows and rows of faux copper nails—treated with a marbleized effect to resemble cat’s eyes, cleverly cooked up by the Creative Nail Design team, who worked on 75 shows during New York Fashion Week.

Try: Maybelline Express Finish Advanced Wear Fast-Dry Nail Color in Brassy.

London Fashion Week

Modern
Modern(ist)

The Look: 80s Redux

Purple Puckers. At Modern(ist), M.A.C. makeup artist Neil Young buffed metallic lilac pigment onto models’ lips with a soft brush. At home, you can use a lavender pencil all over lips, or even more wearable, a tinted lipgloss. “Purple works really well with olive and yellow-toned skin,” he recommended.

Try: Sally Hansen Smile Brightening Lip Treatment in Twinkling.

Sleek Hair. Peter Gray’s daring hairstyles were inspired by Helmut Lang minimalism and traditional African braiding. Starting with styling spray, he slicked hair back into a ponytail, then made two twists in a semi-circle shape at either side. Gray secured the ponytails in place by stitching them to hair at the base of the neck using a needle and dressmaking elastic (don’t try this at home!).

Try: L’Oréal Professionel Texture Expert Infinium 2 Regular Hold Working Spray, and a fine toothcomb to create your polished ponytail.

House of Holland

The Look: SoCal Glow

Beverly Hills 90210 (the antithesis of rainy London!) was the inspiration for makeup at House of Holland. To achieve the hot hue, M.A.C. makeup artist Lucia Pica showed us how to mix two cream blushes and apply it with a foundation brush to avoid that caked-on makeup-y look. Apply to cheekbones and across the bridge of your nose for a really natural effect.

Try: M.A.C. Cream Colour Base in Virgin Isle and M.A.C. Blushcreme in Cherche.

Milan

Alberta Ferretti
Alberta Ferretti

The Look: Sheer Romance

Cherubic cheeks, sweetest lips. Lucia Pieroni dolled up romantic cheeks at Alberta Ferretti. “Target the spot that raises beneath your eye when you smile,” said the pro. Next, she demo’d her favourite way to get a stained lip effect: fill in the middle of your lips with burgundy lip liner, then soften the edges using a cotton ball.

Try: M.A.C. Cremestick Liner in Velvetella.

Say ‘I do’ to the new updo. Redken’s Guido Palau says you’ll need a spray starch to achieve this roughed up texture (necessary for hold), but don’t worry, the end result is soft and ballerina-like. Palau added hair extensions and wrapped the length of the hair around models’ heads, teasing as he pinned it in place for even more texture.

Try: Redken Spray Starch 15 Heat Memory Styler.

Roberto Cavalli

The Look: Bardot hair

Palau added extensions to models with fine hair to achieve all-out luscious locks—a trademark at Roberto Cavalli. At home, volumizing lotion will create a similar body-building effect. He used a round brush to blow-dry, then baby powder to finish. “It’s a dusty feel, so it doesn’t feel too freshly blow dried,” says the pro. Tease the crown and tuck hair behind your ears, pulling out long wisps for a sexy, face framing finish.

Try: Redken Thickening Lotion 06 Body Builder.
